Four years ago today I woke up in a hotel room in New York City. It was my 30th birthday and my guy had whisked me off to my favourite city to celebrate in style.

And celebrate we did. But all weekend I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was… off.

At 30 I was lucky enough to say that I had everything I had ever wanted. A loving, supportive partner and a beautiful home in the perfect up-and-coming Toronto neighbourhood. I had my dream job working on high profile PR tech clients and a clear line of sight to a VP title.

But I also kind of felt like shit. I adhered to the PR consultant’s diet of coffee, hors d’oeuvres and champagne consumed at networking events. I didn’t exercise unless you count running to the bathroom with diarrhea. I was covered in eczema and hadn’t slept through the night in years. Each month PMS kicked in like clockwork. My moods were unstable and I would snap at my husband or break down in a fit of tears at the drop of a hat.

I was miserable.

That weekend I realized that I didn’t want to wake up at 40 and still be miserable. I envisioned a vibrant, healthy life lived on my own terms, doing work that I loved and that made a difference. I vowed to start making some serious changes as soon as we got home (hey, we were in NYC after all!).

I started with the food that I ate and the rest as they say is history.

That brings me to today, my 34th birthday. It feels like a significant one because when I can finally say that I’m living that life I envisioned in NYC. It didn’t happen overnight; it took four years of small steps and changes that added up over time.

To celebrate my birthday I’m having dinner at Drake’s restaurant. I am also launching my new one-on-one coaching program designed to help you start making changes toward a more vibrant, healthy life – banish PMS, optimize your digestion, improve your mood and increase your energy.
