SHININGMy path to natural health and holistic wellness didn’t start in the kitchen, but rather in the bathroom after I developed a terrible rash from using antiperspirant. Switching to a natural deodorant cleared it up almost immediately, but a new rash soon surfaced – this time on my eyelids. Itchy, watery, puffy eyes and skin were enough for me to trash all my make-up, lotions, potions, shampoos, creams and gels. That was seven years ago and I’ve never looked back.

What goes on us goes in us. Even if you’re not breaking out in itchy, burning rashes it doesn’t mean that you’re health is not being affected by the products you use.

In the time it takes her to get ready in the morning the average woman is exposed to 168 different chemicals in her personal care products. Many of these chemicals are known to be allergenic and/or carcinogenic (meaning they cause cancer), and can mess with our hormones. Even if I hadn’t had such a bad reaction to the products I was using that’s more than enough reason for me to seek out natural products.

I know that one of the most difficult parts of going au natural is finding products that work so I wanted to share some of my favourite natural beauty bits. I have tried many, many different products over the years and once I find one that works I like I stick to it. Here are the beauty care staples I’m currently reaching for!

1. Living Libations Seabuckthorn Best Skin Ever
Switching to the oil cleansing method to wash your face will change your life. I happened upon it by accident when I was pregnant and too lazy to buy more face wash, but I have never looked back. I upgraded from coconut oil to this product from Living Libations as it’s formulated with high grade essential oils. It keeps my skin so clear and nourished I don’t even use it every day. Watch this video from Living Libations’ Nadine Artemis to learn more about oil cleansing.

2. Dr. Mist Deodorant
I’ve tried a lot of natural deodorants and this is by far the best. And by best I mean the only one that works. I’ve been using it exclusively for more than five years now! It’s a deodorant and not an antiperspirant so it won’t stop you from sweating but it will keep you from getting stinky.

3. Rahua Shampoo & Conditioner
These products definitely fall into the “luxury” category but they are worth every penny, especially since they are formulated to go longer between washes. I know that sounds like a marketing gimmick but it’s true – when I cheap out on the health food store brands I’m washing my hair daily but I can go a good three, sometimes four days using Rahua which means the bottles last a long time.

4. Coconut Oil
Is there anything that coconut oil can’t do? I keep a pot of coconut oil on my vanity and use it for a million different things from make-up remover to moisturizer (I use it on my face and body), and even use it for oil pulling to clean my teeth and mouth. If I could only have one thing on my beauty shelf it would be coconut oil!

5. Jealous Body Scrub
As a new mum I am usually trying to finish my showers in record time. But on Sunday nights after the baby’s in bed I like to do what I call “The Deluxe” – the full monty of showers that includes all the nice to haves I don’t get to during the week like shaving my legs or exfoliating or hell even flossing my teeth. I love that you could literally eat this scrub (although they advise against it), it smells like heaven and leaves my skin so smooth. And it’s made in Canada!

6. Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soap
Another versatile powerhouse, castile soap can clean your body and your bathroom! I love that my whole family can  and does use this product in the tub. You can also use it as a laundry detergent or household cleaner.

Toothpaste?

You’ll note that there’s no toothpaste on this list. That’s because I haven’t found a product that I love yet. After listening to Nadine Artemis on the Ultimate Health Podcast I am very interested in essential oils for oral care and am looking forward to getting my hands on a copy of her book, Holistic Self Dentistry.

Have you found any great natural beauty products? I’d love to hear about them!
