IMG_7584 (1)So now that we’ve cleared up any confusion surrounding the “downside” of smoothies I wanted to share one of my current favourite blends!

To review, the keys to keep your smoothie from creeping in to milkshake territory are:

  • Low GI fruit
  • Minimal added sweeteners (even the natural ones!)
  • Protein
  • Healthy fat
  • No ice cream

One of my favourite things to add to a smoothie is hemp — either in the form of whole hemp hearts or as a protein powder. Hemp packs a double punch as it’s not just a near-complete form of plant-based protein(not just for vegans, we should all be trying to get more plant sources of protein into our diets) as well as anti-inflammatory omega 3 essential fatty acids.

And because we want our food not just to be healthy but also delicious, I prefer hemp-based protein powders because I find they blend right into your smoothie with no chalky texture and as long as you’re using an unsweetened and unflavoured variety it won’t change the taste either. Hemp hearts give your smoothie a lovely creaminess.

If you’re not getting hemp into your diet on a regular basis what are you waiting for? Try it out in this smoothie and let me know what you think!
